What's the formula to find a niche?
Is it r/s (results/searches) and low is good?
Is it KEI (searches/results) and high is good?
Is it just what pays the most CPC?

What tells me something is a good niche? Like, what formula?

Well, if there are a lot of searches and little results, then that would be a good niche to get into.

There's really no formula. You could jump into a very targeted, specific area such as... tips for Omaha Hi-Lo Poker, but still be in a very saturated market with a lot of compeition.

Or, you could choose a niche such as... photos of frogs, and have no to little competition, but also have no traffic as well.

Part of the answer is finding out which route you want to take... I'm assuming though you want a niche that has a lot of traffic and interest, but not much competition. And those are increasingly becoming rarer and rarer.

Any niche will work if you have the right skills and dedication, but if you're just starting out it's better to stay away from high competition niches like pills, porn, mortgages, gambling,...

I think, for me, the formula to find a niche is to try and create a website geared around something I like. When I first got into owning websites (after my failure at owning a hosting company), I created my personal blog and then a science blog. Why? Because I'm a science major. What does that have to do with you? Well, it's simple. The fact that I am a science major means that I was able to write about something I like. The same is for you. Picking a niche that you like makes creating a website around it much easier. But, I am a blogger, so I think long term. To find a niche based on pure profitability, you want to do some research first and see if you can offer something the leaders in that niche don't offer. Make sense? Become the new leader and the profits will soar.

The only thing I can go by is what has worked for me. Just pay attention to the world around you. Listen to conversations, read the newspaper, watch commercials... put simply... observe the world. You will notice trends, new fads, upcoming products, etc...

Take what you hear and run with it.

Niche stuff is usually considered in affiliate marketing and in product creation. For me, the niche stuff would be that which yields the best earnings/work done ratio.

There is no formula, you chose what you like in life, lets say you love gadget and ipod was the upcoming gadget. You can start a website or blog dedicated to that keyword ipod and only talk about this gadget.

Any updates and stuff will be on this site, basically you need to know the trend and how the market is going, use affiliates and ppc to help boost your results.
