I must say I like the simple and well-designed feel of yourwebsite. There is no extra "fluff", or extraneous links and as for my (very amateur) opinion, I love the design. The only idea for design might be 1) to take out the waving "Angus Listings" from the Flash movie you have. I found it distracted my attention away from the main focus (I do like the following, business phrases).

Two questions: 1) Approximately how long did it take you to build the site? and 2) What do you plan on doing to drive traffic to your site? Are there any inherent benefits for consumers other than being a geographic-focused site? (i.e. personal reviews from people in the area, etc?) I think that would be my biggest worry: How to drive traffic and advantages for users.

Let me reiterate: fantastic design. Clean and efficient.

1) It took about day for the design, the content management system behind is coded from scratch and is continually updated - members can login and keep their webpage, contact details up to date, there is also a ticket system/helpdesk - so you can imagine it look a long time :)

2) In terms of promotion we have paid advertising with Google (& partner search engines such as AOL) for keywords such as Angus, we've have 5K of leaflets printed and we're distributing them at the moment, we've been in the local papers, of course there is world of mouth, we've had a stall at a local event that had a few thousand visitors and we've had an add in the programme which goes out to around 600 people...you can see a preview of our stall with our banners here - http://www.anguslistings.co.uk/view_listing.php?cat=12&id=15

At the moment, since businesses are subscribing we're trying to give the site quite a corporate feel so we don't have a rating/review system. The main advantage is obviously that we actively promote the directory unlike many other services.

The content seems to look perfect for me but I would suggest some tweaks in the template. Aiming at the pictures in the template. After all, everything seems perfectly to me. :)
