I think Google's AdSense is always a good place to start. Some recommend building up more traffic before placing ads on your website - but that depends more on the type of website it is and to me is better for one in which you're wanting to have repeat visitors.

You should check out PublisherSpot (http://www.publisherspot.com/). This is Tyler's (owner of of this forum) website for reviews of ad agencies and networks.

Yes, it is typically recommended that you wait until you have decent traffic before putting ads up, in the hope of attracting more visitors faster as a result of less ads.

Can you define just how much traffic you're receiving? Oftentimes people (like your friend possibly) overvalue traffic numbers, or read traffic incorrectly.

It really depends on what demographic you're targeting. For example, if you're targeting teenagers, ringtones could make you a decent amount of money. Just look at your demographic and try to think of which products/services that specific demographic would be interested in.
