What would you consider to be the most important skills for an internet entrepreneur/web publisher to have?

My choice will probably change after reading other member's reponses but I'd have to say:

Work Ethic: 65%
Creativitiy: 30%
Charisma (people skills, networking, landing deals, etc.): 5%

I don't want to undervalue charisma as I think it's very useful, but I know a lot of people simply don't have people skills but still manage to do well.

Sorry, no %'s because I feel they are all equally important:

Creativity
Resourcefulness
Focus
Motivation
Willingness to Learn
Problem Solver
Able to accept failure, learn from it, and move on
Ability to think for themselves and not be spoon fed by others

Not procrastinating is the best skill to have, always working is key. Having the skill for programming/design isn't necessarily needed, as you can outsource that. Put also being able to market is another needed skill that is important.

I personally think that the top things you must need to have when you first start out on the web is...

Designing Skills
Coding Skills
Programming Skills

After that, you can get deeper into everything else and start doing more advance things. The ones listed below will simply help you get some extra cash to start on your projects.

As many Internet entrepreneurs work from home, I have to say that self-discipline is by far the most important skill that one could possess. I remember back three years ago when I started working from home full time, doing Web development as a job as opposed to a hobby. After a few months, once the honeymoon period was over, I found it so difficult to get up in a morning. I found it difficult to keep the TV turned off while I worked. All these distractions, and they all seemed like much more fun than working.

I still suffer from times of no motivation where I would rather curl up in the living room and watch TV, but that doesn't happen as often as it did three years ago. I've had to discipline myself. Separate work from home.

I'm tempted to say that creativity comes second after self discipline, but anybody can be an Internet entrepreneur. You don't need creativity to do so. Whether you can be a successful Internet entrepreneur without creativity is a debate for another day, but suffice it to say that to be yet another 'Internet entrepreneur', I don't believe creativity is all that important.

Personally, I actually find that charisma is very important. I've always had good people skills and in the short time I've been a regular blogger, I've found my ability to make online friends and use a little charm to gain a favour has been invaluable. However, like you say, Tyler, those people without these skills seem to get by just fine. I guess they have some other skill that replaces the lack of people skills. I, on the other hand, rely heavily on my communication and people skills in all new ventures. But that's only because I have those skills. If I didn't have them, I'm sure I would get by just as well using a different tactic.

Different people find different ways to be successful. It's all about developing a method that works for you. Play to your own strengths.

Someone who is great at writing and marketing, someone who is great at designing and someone who is great at programming will likely have very different ways to become successful entrepreneurs.

But, I believe that success usually comes from making mistakes... learning from those mistakes, trying again and putting they're experience into action. It's also about instead of thinking, talking or planning... actually DOING.

If you have that problem than you definitely need to read this (http://seoblackhat.com/2007/01/29/do-it-fucking-now/).

I think that you have it pretty right Tyler but I would add a greater percent to the people skills because you can have a great product and be great at working online but if you do not know how to deal with people you are not going to be able to sell anything.

I would have to agree with you big time Jamie Harrop on self-discipline, I think thats the real first thing you need to have.

Time!!

If I had 8 hours a day to work on my website business, I would hope I would be very successful. Also Money, because if I had money to pay people to do it for me, I would be well on my way.
