What has been the most successful thing you have ever done on any of your websites for Traffic?

Long term, I performed some SEO work on my site... then I posted a video blog titled "Unknown Facts about self made billionaires". As a result, I now receive a lot of traffic each day from people searching for 'self made billionaire facts'.

Short term, I paid for a sponsored review on Jane May's blog. That brought in its fair share of traffic.

When I first started my blog, I posted some very high quality comments on a number of popular blogs. Because of the comment quality (usually several paragraphs long, as opposed to one liners) the comments stood out and I received a lot of traffic from people clicking my name. That was a low effort, free way of gaining quality traffic. :)

On some of the sites I'm involved with we get around 70% of our traffic from offline advertising. Mostly by distributing leaflets.

If your site covers a local area/community this could be the way to go.

Digg front paged 3 times so far, but it's not as great as it sounds.

The best was accidentally having a top notch website mention my wesbite in their blog post. They happened to find my website through a comment I made on a digg post... interestingly enough....

Hmm, this has to be Google!

Even though I do not attempt to get ranked, I seem to get ranked for a lot of terms on a few of my websites. I end up receiving quite a bit of traffic from Google. With my most recent website, I've been getting a lot of Google traffic and also offline advertising due to it's niche.
