How do I go getting my individual posts to rank higher on google, when using wordpress?

have you enabled the permalinks options for link urls so they are not the default p?=12 and they are more classy like date/topic-title-here ?

If people link to your homepage when they say "oh look at this post", get them to link to the post link itself. Sounds basic but every little helps.
