View Full Version : Quitting my job (On Friday)

On Friday I'm quitting my job and giving this Internet thing a whirl full-time. I was able to generate a nice chunk of change in November which should pay for all my bills through the month of April (when my lease ends)... even if i don't make another penny during that time. But now the hard work starts.

I have no guaranteed income or paycheck and now my time is REALLY my time. If after 4-5 months I can't turn this into something big... it's back to the corporate grind.

So... I'm hoping to win this contest so I can get a new design for one of the sites that will help carry my income... hopefully. Right now only the domain exists. I know you're trying to beat me but I really need this so watch out!

I'll try to create some great threads that you'll be able to use for growing your own business. And, I'd be happy to answer questions in this thread about quitting my job and how I got from point A to point B and how I hope to continue connecting the dots.

I wouldn't mind answering specific questions but... I don't want to show my entire hand.

This success came from ONE site - you'll notice under the "advertisers" column in my earnings pic you posted that it does indeed say "1".

In general, I would say my success comes from keeping tabs on emerging markets and new trends and being the first to capitalize on them. Then, keep tabs on other blogs/sites talking about your niche and drop a little insight with a link to your "reputable" website.

Oh... and some killer linkbait that gets you national news coverage won't hurt

Hey trigatch4, nice to see you quit your day job. Best of luck in the internet biz, full time.

What were you doing before this? If you don't mind me asking.

Went to college for Marketing/Advertising and got my degree and in my first job out of college, 3 years ago, I became an Account Executive for one of the largest media companies in the U.S. - putting together marketing campaigns and selling them to clients. I did it locally so a lot of cold calling businesses and knocking on doors. But at the same time, I had a lot of opportunities and creative flexibility to work with....

In the end, I just feel like all of my talents aren't utilized when I'm shlepping ads for someone else... I felt like this was my only option... and now I gotta make it work!

Yeah I'm going to start updating my blog regularly... unfortunately my company wants me to stay for the full 2 weeks I offered to help train someone who is coming in. Usually, they cut sales people loose as soon as the accounts are transitioned and whatnot.

Thanks for all the kind words and good luck everybody.

No problem! So you will have to work another 2 weeks?

Yeah... 2 more weeks but it's not really "hard work". Since I was in sales, I'm obviously not going to try to make new sales... I wouldn't get the commission anyway since I would be gone when it gets paid out so all I'm really doing is wrapping things up, transitioning accounts to other sales people and training a new person that comes in. Pretty easy and I'll probably be idle most of the days.
