I've been looking at all the wonderful skins that VBulletinskinz has created for months now, and I'm going to hire them in the future to create a skin for TalkPS3.com.

But in the here and now, I want to have a skin created for a phpBB2 forum. All I've came across are sites that provide free skins, mainly of low quality.

Do you know anybody that I could hire. The forum will retro/emu.

My mind begs me to ask this question:

Why on earth spend so much on a forum design, when you're using free software? Surely it would make more sense to purchase a vBulletin license?

This is what i have been thinking regarding my forum http://www.bizsocial.com. I have phpbb installed but want a new skin, problem is I plan to upgrade to vbulletin meaning that the previous skin will be wasted. I need to upgrade to vbull before I can get a new skin.

Well, thats a good question. I've an already established forum that uses phpbb.
Thats the only reason why I am using that. I'm sure there is some way to import
posts etc. from phpBB to vBulletin. But its probably too much hassle.

Then again phpBB is great software even if it is free, and it has a great
community behind it.

Do some poking about on Google, I'm almost positive there's a database conversion tool :)

I'll check that out.

If I do manage to get it to work, do you know a VB skinner that doesn't cost as much as Vbulletinskinz. I'm willing to pay no more than $400 for this particular skin.

Do you know how much the average skin costs? is there much difference between skin costs for phpbb and vbulletin. just rembered phpbb3 is out soon, will that require a different skin?

Yes they provide a tool for it and it is a simple step by step process, you shouldn't have too many problems with it.

OK. I've got vBulletin set up for the forum, and recieved a quote for the skin. I've also downloaded Impex, haven't yet installed it. Just started reading the manual now.

I think the old phpbb forum and the new vb forum have to be on the same server. Any idea how to export/import the db's if they are on different servers?

I've used index to import some threads/members into one of my sites, and it worked perfectly.

good call on moving over to vB

My forums used to be phpbb and I got hacked once or twice.

If you have cpanel doing a major backup and and extractin on the new server is easy

cpanel 2 cpanel

Well, What I'm trying at the moment, is installing the latest version of phpbb on the same account, backing up the old phpbb database, and then importing it into the fresh install. Then using impex to import the database into vB.

All I would need to do then, is close the old forum and forward everyone to new one. I'm just going to start on doing that now, and hopefully it will work.

Sure just export the PHPBB DB on one server, using phpmyadmin and then import it on the VB server, again using phpmyadmin.
