For those of you who own your own server... How much did it initially cost and what is the upkeep price? Also how and why did you get it? What is the benifit to having your own?

It initially cost $200/month and it still does. I got it because my sites were too big for a shared account, and a reseller account lacks the privacy or security of a dedicated server. The perks: security, privacy and the fact that you're in total control.
Having your own servers is liberating.

How did you set it up, or who did you set it up with?

LOL, that'd make a great shirt, or slogan:
Liberate yourself.
Rent a dedicated.

does anybody use godaddy?
i resell through them, and i'm only charging $128/mo for this package
(goes down to $108/mo for 2 yrs plan):
Preconfigured Economy Plan:
• 1x120 GB disk drive
• 500GB bandwidth
• 1 GB RAM
• Celeron® 2.0GHz1 processor
• Red Hat Fedora Core 4 OS
• Plesk 30-domain control panel
• FREE! $75 Google® AdWords® credit*
i can sell it to myself for $89/month, anybody know if they're good for dedicated?
i have about 60 domains on shared hosting with them, and they're pretty good, for the most part no complaints
