I am designing an ecommerce site for a client of mine.
He has also offered to do a 50/50 split with me promoting a few of his products as seperate endeavors.
He has access to one new product that is quite unique. It is a product that can be used for many different purposes, other than it's main intended one.
Searching on Google & eBay for it brought up two results total for the same item. All of the keyword searches brought up items with a similar generic name, but not the actual item itself.
If I had roughly $1,000 - $2,000 to start to get the word out to a massive audience and get buying traffic, what in your opinion, would be the best way to do so? ie; where to spend it, what to do to promote it.
I know alot of the peeps here probably do sites for ads, does anyone here have any experience actually getting traffic to a real prduct you would be selling?
I am a Power Seller on eBay, but I despise their fees, I'd like to do this thing independently and keep all the money!
Thanks to anyone that takes the time to respond.

Is it a product for which you could develop a related blog ?
If it has a number of different uses can you write about a number of ways it could be used?
What kind of market is it aimed at?
If it's a specific niche don't waste any of your budget going after any ol' customer.
If it can be aimed at a broader market, maybe pick a subset of that market and advertise at them first?

it is primarily a household item, but new-fangled & automated.
this guy sells em to businesses for a different use than his regular customers.
i guess blogs with redirects wouldn't hurt, anyone else?

You're not going to like what I say, but I think it'd help us a lot if we really knew what the product actually was. However, I obviously understand that you can't divulge that.
What about the price range of this item? What is it selling for, what range?

i can put it into context maybe to make it easier to get a hold on.
btw, thanks tyler for responding.
let's say it was a new kind of "toothbrush". (it isn't, don't worry)...
we have a modern rechargeable tb that can be used for more than just brushing your teeth. many people will, but it could be promoted to many different industries for different uses.
when i google or ebay search "power tb", i get 2 results for the actual product, but 100's of thousands for similarly named products.
we get them for about 9 bucks, looking to sell them for 24.99 plus ship.
thanks again:)

What's a tb?
I'd do an Overture and AdWords check on the most common related searches and see how cheap and popular the terms are. If you're looking at $10 markup on each one, then a PPC arbitrage type campaign may work for you...

tb was short for toothbrush:p
thanks, it's somepace to start, is that what you'd do?

Well, I'll never sell a product... just not my sort of thing, you know? But if I was in your shoes? Hard to say, because I don't know how well you do as a power seller on eBay, but from what I hear of power sellers, you must already be doing very well moneywise!
Your item sounds very... new and innovative though. I can't say that I don't think of infomercials, catalogues, and specialty sites...
I can't be of too much help here unfortunately since I have little to no experience with selling products...

powerseller is actually easy...made it in the quickest time allowable, 90 days.
you only have to sell $1k/month minimum and have a feedback rating of 95% or something.
i have actually stopped because i got sick of it, too much work, now i sell an ebook for 9.99 showing others how i do it from some sites...hehe
this is my profile:

getting back to the thread...
i actually thought of infomercial for this right away, but that is some serious dough, this guy wants to start cheap.
i will follow up on your earlier suggestions t, thanks
