Hi,
My forum use phpBB now.
I get lot of spam (more than 10+) every day. I have to delete the spam post, then ban the user, this is lot of work.
I have some MOD's installed to stop spam like bot stoper, captcha enabled, user activation and spam words. Still spams are posting on the forum. I have a mod (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=315322) installed that allow moderators to ban abuser.
vBulletin can stop spam posts ? Or willit make easy to ban spamers and clean spam posts ?
Regards,
Yujin

vBulletin can NOT stop spam posts...I don't think any forum really can. Spammers are really really smart these day. I would be to when it came down to that kind of money!

Nah vBulletin can't stop spam. But it helps that vBulletin isn't exactly open source as well. But vBulletin does have better measures than PHPBB. But it can be spammed when it comes down to it, it depends on the admins preventive measures as well.

I don't think vBulleting can stop Spam post. I have notices that it's not that spammers work 24x7. They act at certain intervals. So I believe after some time you will not see them if you continue to do what you are doing.

I personally think that it would be better off putting your forum in a different directory. If it was on http://www.yoursite.com/forum, then change it to http://www.yoursite.com/forums. Sometimes it's automated to post in your forums, so if the URLs had changed then there wouldn't be any thing to post on in the /forum directory.

The biggest thing you can do to fight spam, is having members verify their email address. Spam is here to say, but don't make it easy for them.

Like you said, easiest thing to do. Once you see spam coming in, make users verify their accounts. Or change the file name to the registration page. Or make them wait a couple hours before being able to post.

Functionally, nothing can stop spam except the human eye. But who is willing to put that much effort into it? The only real true way is to evaluate every reply/new thread before it is posted. And that would be a lot of work.

As stated, vbulletin cannot stop spam but it does have some reasonable measures in place.
If your really worried about spam, you could also mod your board so that your activation email dosen't come with a direct link (e.g. via the use of a querystring) but only an activation code and a link to the activation page - this should stop the majority of spam programs/scripts but I suspect the more advanced ones (will be able to identify the activation code in an email due to its obsecurity) will have already cracked this :P.

Here are a couple of the things I do to fight spam with my VB install, and it helps a LOT.
1) Keep up to date with the latest version of VB.
2) Require email verification.
3) Set up your admin panel to notify you via email when a new subscriber signs up.
4) Monitor those new subscriber emails, like a HAWK. You will develop a knack to weed out spammers from that alone if you play it smart. A couple examples:
- watch the email address they are signing up with. A lot of spammers use the xxxxx@spamdomain.info stuff.
- watch the emails for key spam words like: viagstore@yahoo.com or mobileringtone@gmail.com
- watch the user name themselves for spam keywords as well.
- duplicate user name/email address like: user: byron123 email: byron123@yahoo.com
5) When you get one of the spammers mentioned in #4 above using a spammer domain, add that domain to your admin area "user banning options" under disallowed domains/user names.
Also, you need to be savvy and active within your own community. I have some new breed spammers lately who are getting pretty slick. They will sign up, start posting in threads, and the posts are on topic and relevant to the forum. However, they will add affiliate/spam links in their signature. Very sneaky! I delete the posts then ban/delete the user.
A lot of this is not as hard to keep up with as you might think. Receiving the notification emails reduces a lot of the hunting you will have to do.
Hope this helps some! Oh and here's a list of domains/keywords I have disallowed because of spam and/or abuse:
