This is my 5c worth of thoughts on starting a new forum.

Truthfully, I drop by PublisherForums after seeing a post of the $800 prize month, motivated I joined PublisherForums and started posting. This is the simple part.

During the same time, I was reading posts on others who are starting their own forums sites, etc... and trying to make a stable income from it. Putting myself in Tyler's shoes (Daily Average: $256, an't bad at all. :p )

(Now I'm Tyler Cruz) I have invested some $$$ on the skins, the vBulletin software, and even to the extent of offering price money for post contest, etc. The no of posts daily is still not a lot... to me at least.

What more can I do to increase the incoming traffic. For one, I definitely do not go around spamming forums again. Now what?

I reckoned I will be in this situation soon. :D A new forum, nice skins, but no incoming traffic. Hm...

advertise on others forums, buy advertisements on web related blogs. Etc. I think the requirements for winning are set high, maybe scaring many away.

Quality posters which are willing to share new useful information for others, also members asking real questions and admin promptly answering posts all over the forum - this is what attracts me on a forum. Contests on first place for sure :) . But we all know why we are all on those few big webmaster forums - excellent advertising through posts possible and quick job getting opportunities are there.

agree on this, if there are a few people posting usefull information others will join.

Opportunity for a new small webmaster forum is to make a friendly place for semi advanced webmasters - they will all feel on the same level. I as a poster can make an thorough "free online webmaster course" here: with asking (or answering) everything and simultaneously build my sites.

Get John Chow to post about you on his blog :P
Seriously though, if people are not posting, then that may mean there are not enough interesting topics they want to contribute to (most people are too lazy to start new topics). So, either you yourself (along with mod team and friends) create new topics, or hire a few paid posters.
