I am curious if anyone knows of a good site with tutorials on website design. I am not looking for the run of the mill Good-Tutorial or Pixel2Life.
Thanks.

I would have to say the best way is doing it your self. Find a web site on the Internet, that you like the design of. Then try to imitate the design you saw (something that you can easily imitate as well...not something extremely challenging). Then just as closely as possible, recreate it by yourself. Once you get this done, you pretty much have the design pattern of creating templates in Photoshop (designs all usually have the same column ideals). The only way the get better at the graphics is doing the simple tutorials that teach you all the other functions that go into good graphics and then incorporating them yourself. The overall web design is usually gradients, etc.

one of my weak areas in design is column width, what do you prefer the left column size width be in pixels?

Depends on the type of column, preferably 150px or larger. You want to keep the ability to have longer phrases without skipping down a line.

Check out SitePoint (http://www.sitepoint.com/cat/design-and-layout).
One I found that was really good was this (http://www.sitepoint.com/article/principles-beautiful-web-design) one. On Page 3 there is something about the golden ratio that can help you with your column widths.
