Getting high PR is about having backlinks on other sites. Traffic or search engines position don't affect PR. PR itself also doesn't directly affect search engine position and traffic.
Good backlinks:
- from high PR sites content related to your site, with few outgoing links.
Bad backlinks:
- from link farms, bad neighbourdhood sites (sites mentioned in scam or spam reports...)
Links from Directories?
Nobody did a test so far. Inner pages of high PR directories usually have PR0. Someone claimed that link submission in 100 directories gave him PR2.

Here's a table which estimates how many backlinks from how high PR sites you'll need to achive a desired PR. It says that for getting PR8 you need one link from PR10 site :)
http://www.kenkai.com/google-pagerank-table.htm
Can anyone confirm accuracy of the table from experience?

Submitting your site to 100 directories for a PR 2 just doesn't seem worth it. From my experience, getting up to a PR 4/5 is pretty easy. Just get back links from higher PR sites. Seems simple to me.

I've read many times that Google appreciate links from DMOZ, dir.Yahoo.com and Wikipedia a lot.
If you submit in DMOZ, this will automatically list you in Google directory.
Yahoo and Google have some contracts, it's for sure.
Many inner pages of Wikipedia (PR9) have a high PR also and it seems they are considered as high quality by default.

Didn't wikipedia (or is planning too) add rel="nofollow" their links?

they already did that:
example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Guitar_Corporation
look at the external links
source code: <a href="http://www.gibson.com/" class="external text" title="http://www.gibson.com/" rel="nofollow">Gibson Musical Instruments</a>

That's what I thought, so unless Google does something different in their algorithms. I don't think a link on Wikipedia has much strength. Unless the PR isn't influenced by the nofollow tags, and that is just so spiders don't crawl the page but do take in account a link is there.

Yeah.. on virtually every site I've made, I've received usually a PR4 just for simply having the site up - even with zero content.
This could be luck, but I'm talking about 10+ sites...
I think a large part is actually related to the domain name. I'm usually a sucker for a nice domain name so that could explain some of it...
Personally though I never do any SEO work other than trying to make sure my sites are created well with SEO in mind when they are first being constructed.

Nofollow link will give no credit to any ranking in Google. Google published (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/01/preventing-comment-spam.html) this on their blog.
The same applies for comments on blogs. Also for forum signature links if admin decides so.
And I was just thinking about writing an article and put a link below...
Wikipedia articles are usualy ranked in Google SERPS very high, so An Wikipedia link can be good for traffic.

Lol--I got little bit distreesed after reading all these very well documented and informative posts.
I have been looking to improve the keyword popularity on one of my site by increasing my PR as I see all those ahead of me have higher PR. But I see that there is little co-ordinationa between PR and keyword popularity. Or is there any? Please reply.

I guess there is no relationship between Google PR and Google SERPs. You can be "easily" #1 on Google with PR0 site. If you put that long word of your blog in Google, your PR0 blog will be first, since that word has no real compettion and it's very precise.
PR is built by backlinks. SERPs position also depends on backlinks but this doesn't mean it depends on PR. Backlinks are one part of search engine SERPs algorhytm in Google.
Most of this is in short/simple way in Google webmaster guidelines (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769)

Traffic is the only significance I've seen from Wikipedia. Now that PR won't count towards your site.

But for traffic you need you site to be idexed very well on the net. Then only you will get natural traffic.
Besides --boron--I was looking for answer of how do you get your SERPs ranking improved with a keyword that has 1,80000 cometition on google?

Besides --boron--I was looking for answer of how do you get your SERPs ranking improved with a keyword that has 1,80000 cometition on google?
Few tricks and facts:
1. You can't beat some 5 years old competitor sites, because the domain age is a strong factor in SERPs. (Check domain age of any site with http://whois.sc .) New sites are also often victims of Google's Sandbox. It can take 3-9 months (according to some forums' members...) to get out from there. Sandbox means you won' move up in SERPs regardless of what SEO you do. It's a kind of Google "penalty" to new sites. But many people also say they were never stopped by sandbox. I know you're backlinking steadily and updating site daily - the best strategy to avoid sandbox.
2. Keywords in domain, title, first paragraphs of your introduction text on the Home page. Keyword phrases as you imagine people will type them in Ses. Use more keyword phrases.
3. Backlinks from high PR sites which are content-related with your site can help. "Link farms" sites or let's say gaming sites (which are non-related to yours) will not help. Keywords in Anchor text in backlinks are extremely important - use different keywords in backlinks , not allways the same.

Great my friend---my domain is almost 3 years old--and running and kicking. I see--that of the three suggestions you said---the second one is the best--and I'll just do it!

Page rank has more value if it comes from a site with few outgoing links then from a site with a lot of outgoing links.

Well I have bought a Directory that is almost 9 months old and has PR3. I have formulated a strategy of my own to get atleast PR5 if not PR6. I think PR5 is quite easy after what I have studied or researched.
I'll let you all know about my result in April after PR is updated.

The history of previous PR updates (exact dates). Just to prevent surprises. It's not an exactly 30 days interval.

I had backlinks from Wikipedia, but recently Wikipedia made all outgoing links no-follow. So my PR dropped from 6 to 4 http://www.invision.smileyville.net/smilies/wallbash.gif.

I'm trying to find some other high quality sites related to my health blog. Wikipedia really has an awesome power, so many times among first 10 in Google. If nothing other then $299 for Yahoo directory will be necessary. Google put a strong weight on Yahoo submision, I would say.
