Two questions: What's the difference between a sitemap in ROR format and in XML format?

Where will this sitemap appear on a site? I mean is this only for SE purpose or also for site's visitor?

The site map is specifically for SEO purposes these days. But it can also be useful for some visitors. Personally, I'd go with the XML format too.

When you've created a sitemap, you can submit it in search engines.

Google (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html).

Yahoo's Submit a website (https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit). put Google's sitemap URL in. (You can submit page by page also if you want).

For MSN, I wouldn't know...

I believe Google has a site map creator as well in their webmaster tools.

Yup: www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps (http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps)

I never found it too useful but it's most definitely interesting enough to take a look at.

When puting a sitemap on the site, where should be placed? I guess it can be as a file somewhere, but it maybe can also be visible for visitors.

most people just put a link at the bottom of there site to the sitemap (anchor text: sitemap ;) )

I've always found googles sitemap creator difficult to use but xml-sitemaps.com is great.

For someone who has no idea how to create a sitemap automatically, this is a great tool.
