I've built below list a while ago, am not sure if it is 100% accurate, it shows main file types and corresponding programs.

Building your own list is a great learning tool, but there are soooo many file types and extensions you could make a career of it. This site already did:

It's a good resource and a good learning exercise to see why, when you ask to open an unfamiliar file type and allow an Internet search to find the program, these guys are the one that comes up. Domain name, title bar, meta description, meta keywords, keywords in the text without over stuffing ... seems well done.

There are reasons why file extensions need to be listed in different ways.
Someone only needs them A-Z.
Someone only needs a collection of the main "everyday" file types. I will try to arrange my messy post above.

All contributtions toward this matter appreciated.
Filext.com made a good SEO. They are 1st on Google for file extensions.
