I never got into the Affiliate program scene because I was always discouraged by me earning percentages of my advertiser, AND losing traffic. (Which, by next time the visitor wants a product, they will go straight to the advertiser's webpage)

How do you influence your users to use your links to buy things on, let's say, Amazon.com? What is keeping them coming to your site and using your referral address?

If anyone has any success stories, do let me know. I am quite interested if there is a long term market for this stuff.

I have no experience of this aspect,let's say,no matter how much $ you earned from your advertiser,it doesn't matter,don't take it seriously.Little better than nothing, yeah?:D I treat these as entertainment, the extra-curricular beside leisure life.If you put amazon.com ad, when the people clicked,no matter how long they buy the product after clicked your advertiser,you should get some referral earnings ,more or less.

i have a bit of experience, just started though

i have one site, took me a few days to make my first sale, but now i'm making $60 in 6 days with just one site, not that much but it's all new to me :)
now i'm starting a 2nd site, its online for a few days now, i hope that that one also makes me some money
