I think Tyler would like to have it the way you did it, just create a new thread if you need to say hi. But if enough people ask for it, I'm sure he'll add it to the forum.

I've never been a fan of such areas. Only a small amount of new members actually post there, and then when they do, all that occurs is that everybody basically says "Hi." Consequently, all the threads are virtually the same and nothing really comes out of it other than a bit of a welcoming committee.

As the site grows, it makes even less sense to have such an area. If people want to announce their arrival, they can start a new thread... but there isn't enough of such threads to warrant a dedicated forum for them.
