What kind of crappy browser does the PS3 use and how do you code for it, or whatever?

I don't want to install Linux on my PS3, can I just install a different browser or something? It's crap. It's so crappy, I would have to say crap 200 times in a row to describe it.

Sony should have used an established browser instead of trying to create their own.
Wii for example uses Opera.

Yea, I don't know what browser it is, probably made in-house, but I'd assume you are stuck with it.

Would it not be difficult to compile an edition of the IE, Firefox or a similiar browser for the PS3?

Remember its not windows or linux so it would be a fair bit different underneath - even if it the browser has the same interface (e.g. Office on Mac is different from Office on Windows).

Well, I don't know the licensing behind do that. But I'd bet a million dollars if PS3 wanted Firefox or Opera on the system, they could get it extremely easy. IE on the other hand . . .

Opera Developer Havard blogs about this :

There's no denying it: PlayStation 3 hasn't quite been the success that Sony might have hoped for, at least so far. Xbox 360 has a solid lead, and Wii is outselling both of its competitors despite not being as powerful in terms of graphics quality and processing power. While PlayStation 3 is apparently available on shelves all over the world, people are still having a hard time getting their eager hands on Nintendo's new Wonder Console.

One of GameSpot's "10 Things to Make the PlayStation 3 Worth Buying (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6167180/index.html)" is to "Fix Web Browsing":

Sony billed the PlayStation 3 as a gaming console that can do everything: "Music, Photos, Internet, Videos, and Movies." It's supposed to be the living-room media center. That might become a reality if Sony iterates more on its Internet and media applications. How is it that a machine as powerful as the PlayStation 3 can't manage to browse more than a few Web sites without crashing?

What's interesting is that people are already enjoying movies and music in their living rooms by using the Wii browser as a Media Center.

It's quite surprising that Sony apparently chose the same company that delivered the PSP browser to provide a browser for PlayStation 3. As I recall, Sony were not exactly enthusiastic about the PSP browser.

Sony... Are you listening? You know that you need a better browser. A smaller, faster browser with support for all sorts of Web technologies, including Ajax. Why settle for second best if you really want your system to be THE living-room media center? You've already decided to use Opera for mylo and other consumer electronics products. You are just one step away from getting the best browser for your new console too :)
Opera seems quite eager to do it for PS3 :P
And porting it is going to be much easier than firefox as Opera has been developing browser for various systems and knows the requirement for each. Apart from Computers and Mobile Phones Opera is currently available on Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, settop boxes etc.
See all the list here (http://www.opera.com/products/devices/gallery/)

I would look a bit unprofessional if sony where effectively mooching off the good developers for firefox or opera :o.

I think Microsoft might be eager to get some form of their browser on a rival console :P. I just don't think sony would go for it.

I think some third party will invent a better browser for it and people will use it.

People are hacking the heck out of the PS3. People love hacking stuff. :) There is even one guy who's trying to play Wii games on it. lol.

Can sony deploy updates through an internet connection? Maybe they could send out a browser replacement.

I've not used the PS3 yet, its not here in the UK or Europe yet.

I would recommend to use the PS3 for just gaming purposes. Gaming consoles aren't meant for other things. Just like PC's aren't really meant for gaming.

Sony touted their console as entertainment hub - to justify the high cost.
Also pc gaming market is huge. Why else do you think companies are investing billions of $$ to develop new hardware and software.

I'd fully disagree. First person shooters in my opinion are best on the PC. The PC gives an incredible level of accuracy compared to Console controllers. Plus games like WoW would be a lot more difficult to play on consoles.

Yes, in my opinion mouse is much better than the small stick they have on the joystick.

The PS3 has just been released here in the UK... i haven't got my hands on one yet apparently it sold tons more than the 360 and wii launches.
