i noticed that a lot of you guys have blogs describing your web publishing exploits. is this some kind of new trend? when did you all start doing that? what is it for? seems like they are either used to brag about how much money you made, or talk about how much money you wish you made. do people actually read that stuff? do you make money from your blog?
tyler gets a pass cause he owns this forum and he make more money than me. kudos.
i have a blog, but i usually just keep it restricted to personal stuff.

my blog is http://www.webbrander.com. I have made a few dollars from my blog, nothing major. I dont brag about how much I have made neither do most of the ones I have read, they just state it as a fact and what thier aspirations are and if they have met there targets.
p.s. if you want link exchanges let me know

I read several entrepreneur blogs and I am not an entrepreneur. I usually read them because they are usually interesting and I sometimes learn stuff from them that I can use for my own stuff, ex. marketing techniques.

I started mine as some people requested it from SitePoint and I also thought it would be a good idea to keep a diary of my work stuff, so that I could look back and reflect on things, such as the rate of my income and projects, etc.
I read other people's blogs to see what people are doing and what's new in the industry. There are always interesting and useful things to read.

A blog for me is purely somewhere to dump whatever's on my mind for the world to see, comment on, agree with, disagree with, be disgusted with or whatever they wish. It's something personal for me, not for the entertainment of others (or at least not primarily).
I will however be launching some blog based websites shortly which provide articles and news relating directly to some specific markets and niches.
Time to experiment with monetizing blogs I think :)

I started my blog for a few reasons...
I like to write
It is a method of keeping track of my persuits
It keeps me on target
It saves me telling people my plans individually
It is something to look back on

Personally I find it quite arrogant. Income is rather personal and I don't believe it's something that should be publicised in such a way.
The mere thought of a blog can be seen as quite arrogant and self minded to some people. Although I have to admit, I have a blog. But I typically use it to announce projects that I'm working on and share events in my life with others.
My blog acts as a way to communicate with my audience, putting a human face on my services - not a dollar value.

I do not know why you find it arrogant. I find motivation and inspiration to be perhaps the two most powerful forces in the universe (maybe behind love and compound interest (Einstein's quote "Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.")
People who keep track of how much they make aren't doing it for boasting reasons, but more of a motivational tool. I love recalculating my earnings, only to see them increase. It motivates me to make more.
Income may be personal to you, but it is not personal to everyone. Especially in our business, since we are self employed, or working on being self employed, the whole nature of our business is to make money, so naturally it makes sense to talk about it a lot.

Sure, I see where you are coming from. I understand people have different opinions about these types of things. As stated my opinion was a personal one and does not reflect anybody elses.
With that said, I keep track of how much is earnt, I calculate my earnings and I track where money is coming from and how money is being spent. However, I do so in my own time. I don't have to prove anything to anyone, except me. So my earnings are kept to myself, not publised on my blog or any other websites.
Everybody is in the business of making money. It's the only way to survive the world we live in. It's true that those of us who are self employed may keep track of it more than others, however I still believe it's something that is quite personal to all of us and as such it should be kept that way.
I'm not attacking anyone, I'm just voicing my opinion.
I didn't say you were boasting about your earnings. All I'm saying is, why not keep your earnings to yourself? Surely the same motivation should count if your true intention is to watch your earnings grow? Why publicise your figures every day?
I find it quite curious, that's all.

Part of it is the potential humilation of not exceeding my daily earnings, or meeting my goals. By making it public, it helps stir a driving force that may otherwise be non-existant.

I see. So it's basically a community based approach at at staying motivated and on track. In that respect I can see why you set these types of blogs up.

Mine was supposed to be about stupid stuff i find on the net or people in the media that piss me off. Then i changed the name and format and decided to blog about everything of interest to me.
As work is my passion and i enjoy it, i blog it. So there you go.
Im not writer that for sure, and im terrible at spelling. I tend to hit save or reply before i proof.... but blogging is fun. Its good to know your point of view is stored forever and someone somewhere may just have a peek.

That's a good thing to do Tyler. I too agree with you that doing such things can be a motivating force. Although, I haven't ever done it myself.
